Super Duper Superstitious

Superstitious beliefs are very common in the Philippines, and we Filipinos like to believe them. We follow a certain method that has been passed from one generation to another. I, myself, am a victim of this culture, but nevertheless, I am the hardest person to fool with these nonsense superstitions.

In my situation now, I heard people say, if a woman is pregnant, she is not supposed to go out during the night by herself. She should wear black undies to cover the tummy from the witches. According to them, witches loves to smell the fetus inside the womb. And, also, you have to hang garlic on the window to block the witches from entering your room.

For me, I can’t avoid worrying and being scared about this super duper superstitious belief. It really makes me sick! During my first pregnancy, I didn’t have any worries and fear; because, nobody was telling me those things.

Yesterday, I went to the doctor to take my worries away, and I had my transvaginal ultrasound. Everything is good, I saw the baby on the screen, and I also heard the heartbeat of the baby.

38 Had something to say...:

bakit wala pa comment ito? wag sabihing...

ako nga una yipeee!

may pic ba yung ultrasound? di ko makita. oo dami daming dyan paniniwala.at lalo na pag nanganak dami ritual nakita kay mader nun. wag masyadong isipin baka makasama pa sa iyo.

hay naku Raquel, yun mga belief na ganyan eh panakot lang ng mga matatanda... saan ba naman nagsimula ang mga yan? dont let these things worry you...

Lanie G said...

Hi Raquel, its normal for pregnant to worry about anything, just take it easy and eat healthy para imong baby healthy.
About the supertitious belief.. I myself still belief those it happened in real. Daghan man good wakwak dinha sa atong nasod maong humot na sa buntis pero kay naa man ka sa city ug subdivision nagpoyo wala na dinha sa mga province ug bukid..ilaya ilaya.. labi na ngitngit. Take it easy nalang ka dinha Raq, ayaw palabi sa worry kay safe man ka. Ayaw lang tulog sa bukidnon kay layo na to kaayo. take care

ghee said...

I can name some superstitious beliefs about pregnancy but I don't want to alarm you given your sensitive condition. They're not true anyway... sometimes I'd think katuwaan lang ng mga matatanda mga yun... they mean well pero imbentoimbento lang nila para may maipayo sa mga buntis... exaggerated na nga iba... Have a healthy pregnancy, Raquel! :)

chase said...

It is not true. It's all hogwash. That's why sometimes I wished that I never listened to those things

ann said...

Siguro depende rin sa place kung nasaan ka sa pinas. Sa bandang Visaya kasi di ba sabi nila maraming marunong sa mga kulam-kulam, kaya siguro ganyan.

haze said...

Do not think about superstitious belief Raquel what you think is do what's best for you and the baby ! Just like what you did with Maria. Look at her beautiful, normal and healthy baby :)! From supersisto, "to stand in terror of the deity" Superstitions could either be a help or fear, depends to a person! Pero if you don( believe things will not happen anyway ! Tsaka parang ngayon ko lang narinig yang sa mga pagbubuntis na yan :) !

Tikya said...

Raq, congrats for the pregnancy! sus, magiging ate na pala si Maria, sana baby boy na yan no? ingat ka lagi jan and enjoy ur stay!

@ TIKYA:
Thank you Tikya, hay sana nga maging boy na, yan din ang gusto ni hubby. Pero nung natagalan akong nabuntis, sabi nya kahit babae basta maging two na mga anak namin ay ok lang sa kanya.

Just believe in reason not in fiction my dear friend. In Holland we do not do any of those things and children are as healthy as they can be, mothers feel comfortable as they can be (at least mentally of course) and there are no issues about possible dangers outside the realistic ones. Have a laugh about it, and try to forget the hocuspocus nonsense. If it was all true, don't you think my country and many other (western) countries would be in deep trouble? Check some rates of birth and trouble around this subject on the net, and you will see that there is not such thing as dangerous witches and more like this kind of things. Because if that would be so, wouldn't you agree that the percentage of healthy baby's/birth would be higher in the Phillipines or other supersticious countries? You will see nothing like that I am sure. So calm yourself down, realize to be realistic and let them talk. Tell them you don't wanna hear it or just don't listen! You will do fine, with a purple undie, a red one or a black one. It is all the same. Put your garlick in your food instead of wasting your bedroom smell and have a joyfull pregnancy without any magic hocus pocus! Muakkksss!

yeah, sometimes the superstitions get really funny coz they start to sound silly. kung ako naman ang tatanungin, basta walang mawawala sayo, ok lang naman na sundan mo yung superstition. lalo na sa atin naman talaga, marami ring witches or kung anu-anong beings dyan sa tabi-tabi. hehe.

cool naman nyang ultrasound mo. that's rather new, noh. as soon as you can have a photograph taken of your baby, pakuha ka ha ;)

Pregnancy is all about Good and Happy things. Yup, superstitious beliefs is everywhere not only in Philippines but i guess also in many Asian countries. All I can say is if by placing garlic around the house and wearing black undies is make you feel comfortable and make your mind at ease, why not just follow those beliefs. You got nothing to lost. Go to Cogon Market buy a dozen of black undies and a kilo of Garlic this won't cost you a fortune. Be Happy!

Richard said...

I am not a superstitious person (unless you count religion as superstition). I love hearing about different superstitions various cultures have.

Wishing you a happy and comfortable pregnancy and a beautiful and healthy baby.
