Cold and Flu Season

Cold season is upon my household. Both the kids are sniffling. It started with my eldest; then she passed it to my one month old baby. Both of them are feeling better now, but I think, hubby is getting sick too. I am the only one who is not sick; I hope that I will not acquire this cold, because it will be a misery for me.

We went to our Pediatrician; there were many children in the sick waiting area. Not all of them had the same type of illness, but they were all sick. I think, cold and flu season has come early this year. Be safe, cold and flu can last for a long time, and it is just around the corner. A virus is more active in the colder weather because of its ability to survive in less humid conditions.

Keep the humidity up in the house, this will help settle the dust that carry bacteria and viruses; remember that fresh clean smell after a good rain! The humidity helps to clean the air. Also, because of the “dry” air, viruses and bacteria are attracted to environments that we provide. Notice that static build up when it is cold and dry outside, just touch your car when you get out and you will notice a shock. The same but warm environment builds up static from clothes dryer. They humidity that you add to the air can get rid of this static build up; and the attraction that those germs have for us is also lessened.

Winter is coming, stay warm!

Successful At Last

This couple has been married for over three years. Two months after their wedding, the wife got pregnant, but her pregnancy didn't reach full term. She had a miscarriage, when the baby was five months in her womb. They had been trying to get pregnant again, but their attempts were always unsuccessful. The couple had fertility struggles, and they desperately wanted to have a baby.

They had gone to more than one doctor for fertility workups. They had many laboratory tests, and they had been taking vitamins. But it didn't work. One day, they went to an experienced doctor. The doctor advised them to stop all the medications that they had been taking. The doctor wanted to know if the woman was producing eggs without the hormones that she had been taking. In just two months of observation, she got pregnant!

Yay! I am going to be an aunt!!! I am so proud of my big sister K. She is currently in her 7th and 1/2 month of pregnancy. I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. I was 3 months pregnant, when she found out she is pregnant.

I saw how happy my sister K was; because I spent my first five months of pregnancy in the Philippines. She was the one who influenced me of her scary superstitious beliefs too. Funny, because, when I went to her house, I saw clusters of garlic hanging on the windows and pomelo tree branches with thorns on the door. She wasn't a superstitious person, but after she had been through so much from having a miscarriage to trying to get pregnant, she did not care what people said. She said, why not follow those beliefs, I’ve got nothing to lose anyway.

Halloween Sweet Treat

Julie, of TEACHERJULIE.COM, gave me this nice, treat, award called "Halloween Sweet Treat". The first time I came to her blog, she had an entry of Paper. It was from the Photohunt Meme. I was interested, and I, also, played along. Her daughter drew a portrait of her family. I think it was so sweet, and she is very creative, for a four-year-old, to draw like that.

It's time for me to pass some treats. The rule is to choose, at random, friends or visitors to give an award. This is difficult for me to pick who will be awarded; because I have had so many favorite friends. As my random picks, I am giving this award to:

1. Annie of Journey of Life
2. Jo of Precious Thoughts
3. Ghee of Gentle And Compassionate
4. Lutchi of The Four Season of my Life
5. Trinity of Rooms of My Heart

If you are not to busy, I will be happy if you can pass this treat to your friends before the Halloween.

This Sweet Treat award originated from Anni of Hootin’ Anni.

Day and Night Sleeper

Having a second child can bring back the memories of my first born. I cannot avoid recalling and comparing the two.

While looking for information, I've read different kinds of books and looked up on the internet, about what to expect during the first year with my baby. It says, most newborn babies cry a lot; so, I was a bit prepared before my first child was born. During the first two months, she was a crying baby. It was hard for me to figure out what she was crying about; it seemed sometimes that she cried for no good reason.

Drawing upon that experience, I was and am expecting the same thing with my second newborn baby. But, until now, I am wrong. The second baby tends to sleep a lot, during day or night. I've had a hard time for the first two weeks, that is, from a nursing point of view; because she didn't get enough milk. For some reason, after five minutes of nursing, she was knocked out, warm (not cold), and fell to sleep. Every hour or two I woke her up, just to nurse her. I did not understand. So, after seeking a doctor's advice, I started to unwrap her from her blanket each time I fed her. He also suggested that we wipe her with a cold wet cloth. This usually helps to stimulate her a little, so that she will stay awake a little longer to feed more.

She is not a crying baby at all, but when she gets hungry, oh boy, her mouth stretches out up to her ears. Even now, she can nurse longer than what it takes to satisfy her from one breast; and, as usual, I always knock her out and she falls to sleep soon. Then after three hours, I will wake her up to feed her again.

Potty Training Initiated

About two months ago, I started training my eldest daughter to use the potty. I tried, maybe, for only two days, then I stopped. I know it takes a while to train a two year old child to use a potty; but, there are reasons why I wasn’t persistent enough to do the training. I was eight months pregnant; it was hard for me to bring my daughter in the bathroom to sit on her potty. She never had much interest, and it has been a long and difficult process for me to do this job. Also, I was focused on teaching her the alphabet and other child development tasks. It was hard for me to do two things at the same time, so I gave up on her potty training.

I realized, since my husband is on leave for three months, I could leave this potty training responsibility for him. So we started the potty training of my daughter on October 5, 2007. For the first time, she successfully peed in the potty! On the next day, we asked her to go in the potty, and after a few minutes of sitting there, she peed in the potty again! Then on the third day, without suggesting for her to go in to potty, she went there by herself and peed again! Until now, she is using the potty when she feels like peeing. WOW! I am impressed.

Whew! After a long process and stress to all of us, yesterday she initiated to poop in the potty.

We still have a long road ahead of us, but it has been so nice having her initiate the whole potty training this time.

The Final Countdown

Down there was supposed to be posted on September 30, 2007 at 3:12 a.m.; but something happened, and I could not think of anything except my hubby. Around 3:30 in the morning my amniotic fluid broke. Hubby was not there; but after one call, he arrived like in a blink of an eye. On September 30, 2007 at 9:37 AM, I gave birth to a second child.

There are more stories to tell, but I am still healing and resting. I will be back to blogging after my recovery. I miss you all!

Labor Pains

September 30, 2007 3:12 AM

There are three signs of labor, these include bloody show, water breaking and regular contractions. The contractions become more frequent and closer together, as the delivery of the baby is near. By the time the contractions reach 5 minutes apart, you need to get ready to go to the hospital. But, if the water breaks, you need to go to the hospital, no matter how far apart the contractions are!

During my first pregnancy, I was told, by my certified nurses mid-wife and pregnancy class facilitator, that those are the signs of labor. I was looking for these sign, but with that in mind, I did not experience even one of them. My contractions were irregular, from between 30 minutes to 1 hour apart. So, misinformed, how could I tell if I was in labor? I was in pain and had not slept for three (3) nights and four (4) days. Then, I could no longer tolerate the pain; so I went to my Ob-Gyn, and I had them check. They confirmed, my cervix was dilated to 4 cm, and I was in labor! If I were to rely on the signs that they had told me to look for, I think I would have dropped the baby without them! In fact, they had to give me pitocin to make the contractions get to five (5) minutes apart and closer, and the certified nurse midwife had to break my water! So much for the universal signs of labor! And this is the real kicker: after my delivery they told me that some people go into labor and never reach contractions that are five (5) minutes apart. Well, I think it was a little late to be telling me this! Don’t you think? LOL!

Last night, I started having regular contractions, they were about ten (10) minutes apart. Again, it was hard to tell, if I was in labor again; because the water or amniotic fluid had not broken yet, and the contractions were not five (5) minutes apart. If my water had not broken by eight O’clock in the morning, I would not have hesitated to go to the hospital. I wasn’t going to let happen, again, what I had experienced at the end of my first pregnancy!
